Sunday 31st December – Windsurf ***** River Orwell at Levington Marina – sunny periods and showers.

Foil – 20.62 knot max, 19.25 knot ave, 14.31 knot hour, 18.27 knot mile, 40.40 km., 15.6 knot alpha.

Starboard Freeride 150 and a Tushingham Bolt 5.5.

Gave yesterday a miss so went on a nice walk in the gloom with a picnic in the light rain by the Orwell at Nacton so being the last day of the year, a good breeze from the SW and the sun out I was keen to have one last session in 2023 hoping to get a reasonable hour to end the year. With high water at 2.20 I was in no hurry to get to Levington, actually arriving at the marina around 11 but the tide was still pretty low so I had to launch by the marina entrance. Foil board was quickly set-up and I nearly went for my 6.5 again but a big gust came through so I went for 5.5. which proved ideal for most the session :) It took me 18 tacks to get out to the deep water and I thought I had rigged too small but the onshore breeze soon picked up and I was soon doing long runs from the corner down towards Pin Mill. I had the whole river to myself, I only saw one small fishing boat on the water but the highlight was a flock of avocets flying overhead as I saled across Nacton Shore bay:) So it turned into a top session, a great way to end the year, got a reasonable hour, over 14 knots, broke 20 knots and managed a nice mile being on the water nearly two hours, could have done without with the brief spell of light rain but the sun soon returned:) The Tushingham Bolt I got for a really good price is a great sail, it takes the big gusts and is great to gybe! Then pack up, shower and head for home to spend the afternoon with the wondserful Maeva who we are looking after as her parents are a bit under the weather:( What a top way to end the year, Mag and I hope to head down to Felixstowe seatfront tomorrow morning to catch the first sunrise of the year and hope to get out windsurfing for the first sail of 2024 early in the week!
